Eco label listing: R2000 SUSTAINABLE HOUSE

R-2000 certified new homes are best in class energy efficient homes that include high levels of insulation, clean air features and measures to help protect the environment. This translates into energy savings, increased comfort and a healthier environment for the homeowner. Every R-2000 home is built to the R-2000 Standard developed by Natural Resources Canada, which was developed by the Government of Canada and Canada’s home building professionals. The R-2000 Standard includes requirements related to energy efficiency, indoor air quality and the use of environmentally responsible products and materials. It does not specify exactly how a house must built, but rather, sets criteria for how an R-2000 home must perform.

Personally, I think that this form of certification is one way that Canada is beginning to move towards building more effective, innovative and economic housing. For such a wealthy country, I think that Canada lacks responsible ways of building, since many times I see large and expensive condos going up at every street corner without much care to the surrounding environment and also the materials. In North America we tend to look for cheap and fast ways to build, however many often forget how that affects the life of not only the building itself, but also for those who use them. I think that the R-2000 Standard begins to address how to build sensitively by involving those that inhabit the space and the environment. It begins to look at the site, people and the structure as a whole, increasing the quality of life and the longevity of the building through efficient energy consumption, material, water conservation and thermal mass.
