Sustainability within H&M

H&M is a large international clothing company that originated in Sweden that has now taken over 53 countries as of 2013. It is ranked the second largest clothing retailer. With its large influential platform in every country, the company started a sustainability line that is affordable and attractive to as many people as possible. The line is called H&M Conscious and takes into account seven commitments to heart. The seven commitments are to provide fashion for conscious customers, choose and reward responsible partners, be ethical, be climate smart, reduce, reuse recycle, use natural resources responsibly, and strengthen communities.

To further explain the concept of these 7 commitments, there is a description of all 7 below:

Provide fashion for conscious customers: H&M says the quality is much more than the fabric we feel between our fingertips. It’s about the planet and the people around us and about offering the best that the company has in both fashion and sustainability, not just one or the other.

Choose and reward responsible partners: They set the bar high for their suppliers and regularly check how well they live up to the H&M demands. They feel as though having a long-term partnership, training and rewarding good sustainability performance will better the business and planet itself.

Be Ethical: Fair play, respect, and integrity are fundamental to their business. Being ethical also means protecting human rights and fighting corruption in the industry. H&M will not only take responsibility for their colleagues, but also to serve as a good example wherever they operate.

Be climate smart: Being climate smart is a constant series of choice, big and small; choosing efficient lighting, for example. It means they are able to inspire those around them to make equally smart climate choices, such as washing at lower temperatures or skipping the dryer stage all together.

Reduce, reuse, recycle: With the older clothes that are purchased at H&M, consumers are able to drop any clothes that they no longer need back at H&M to give them a new life. H&M also reduces, reuses, and recycles on other fronts: hangers, packaging, shopping bags and more.

Use natural resources responsibly: Making great fashion can use a lot of resources – for example, water. Cotton needs it to grow and many companies use it to wash their clothes. To create a more sustainable fashion future, considers generations from today and make fashion using less of the planet’s resources.

Strengthen communities: The way H&M does business has an impact on millions of people. They contribute to over one million jobs and they strongly believe in the shared value of investing in social and environmental initiatives that strengthen communities around them.
