Being a company rooted in the outdoors, they state they thrive to be as friendly to the environment as they can. Every year, the company releases an annual report stating what aspects of their products are environmentally friendly in order to raise awareness within their own department. Creating a rating system called the Green Index, they wanted to peruse a cradle to cradle ideology in their design. The index communicates environmental performance in a simple format in order for consumers as well as other companies to join the developing towards a greener world.

The rating system allows to understand the climate, chemical and resource impacts for individual footwear styles. After releasing their their 2008 chart, they started a journey to reduce their environmental impact and gain a better rating by the end of 2011. Interestingly enough, by the end of 2014, the released report stated that their product was manufactured of 3% Renewable Materials, 2.7% Organic materials, and 91.4% Recycled Materials, which was a huge difference from where they started.

2012-04-product-hooksett.jpgFocusing on the hand-made Earth-Keepers, which is supposedly Timberlands most eco-conscious shoe, the company tried to focus on producing with the least amount of materials as possible. The four materials they chose were Organic Cotton, Natural rubber, aluminum, and Leather pieces. All leather pieces are scraps and offcuts of Hookset Handcrafted collections. The leather is LWG silver-rated. Once the product is manufactured, it is put boxes that are made from 100% post-consumer recycled cardboard with minimal soy-based inks to print the logo.

Timberland encourages other shoe companies to use their Green index rating. This type of change took about 8 years for the company, and although their stocks went down for a bit, the company is doing better than ever.
