Ever thought there would be a replacement for concrete? Well, foamcrete is the material to look up. Foamcrete, also known as foamed or cellular concrete, is a lightweight material that can be used for the development of infrastructure to the benefit of communities at a low cost. The cost of foamcrete can be reduced by replacing large percentages of cement with ungraded ash. This replacement does not reduce it’s compressive strength, but is enhanced with fiber. The use of chopped polypropylene fiber improves the shear behavior of small structural elements. Even the load-deflection behavior of foamcrete beams are similar to normal concrete beams.

Foamcrete is a mix of water, sand and cement in varying proportions, blended with a stable preformed foam to produce a flowable concrete. This is ideal to a wide range of applications. The addition of foam allows the incorporation of high air content into the mixture to allow the foamcrete to change its densities. This foam is 98% polystyrene and 2% air, coated with a certain plastic.


Foamcrete consists of expanded polystyrene (EPS) beads for cellular light weight concrete. This material is non-toxic, insulating, sound absorbing and can be used as a replacement for sand and stone when mixed with cement to make concrete. This material does not transmit vibrations, making it suitable for earthquake prone cities. Its unlikelihood to collapse allows for its use in free form constructions to be without form work and hand castings


Possible applications of foamcrete include lightweight structural components and non-structural components such as thermal and sound insulation slabs, moisture resistant slabs and roof slopes.
