MycoBoard

By Sony Chen

MycoBoard is made from agricultural waste and mycelium (mushroom material). It is a food-grade building material with high screw hold strength and durability. The material is biofabricated and grown using mycelium. It grows indoors, in the dark, and only requires a week to grow. Mycelium is a natural glue, and it binds the loose agricultural particles and fibers together. It requires no chemical resin. MycoBoard can be customized and molded into different shapes and thicknesses. The material is biodegradable, compostable, and renewable, and it has low toxicity and a low carbon footprint.

The Usage:

MycroBoard can be a substitute for engineered wood and MDF (medium-density fiberboard), which contain toxic binders. The current applications are in furniture, work surfaces, folded furniture components, seat backs, and architectural panels. Gunlocke used MycoBoard as the seat back material for Savor (a beautifully-designed chair). MycoBoard could be the ideal material for building highly sustainable furniture, or even building material for a sustainable house. However, the chair still has a hardwood frame, made of ash and maple, and there is no other example of how MycoBoard can be used as the main material for furniture; it is only used as a minor part. The concern is that MycoBoard’s material property is too coarse and that an additional wood veneer will be needed.
